BarreAsana

Ballet and yoga combine forces in this tough, but enjoyable, workout from barre-class experts Barrecore

 What is it?
Barrecore studios has long been known for whipping women into ballerina-body shape with its barre-inspired workouts. Its next exciting offering is a class that teams its classic ballet-inspired workouts with flow yoga. The class starts with sun salutations and moves onto yoga poses with the help of the barre (which makes us feel like real prima ballerinas!). You don’t need to be a dancer to enjoy or benefit from this class, but you’ll feel as strong and supple as one when you’re done!

What are the benefits?
Ballerinas are renowned for their beautifully toned and slender figures, but – believe it or not – they’re not born that way! Their much-sought-after shape is all down to the strenuous full-body routines they do that work not only the body’s larger muscles, but also the small, stabilising muscles – the ones that help to keep you sucked in, standing tall and looking long and lean. Team this with yoga, which offers increased flexibility, improved mobility and, of course, works wonders for relaxation, and you’ve got a match made in heaven. It’s a workout like no other, offering a new challenge that’s enough to get you past any plateau or rev up your results. The pace is also fairly intensive, so you’ll get your blood pumping a bit, too!

How hard is it?
The class is challenging, as it forces you to try moves that aren’t necessarily common for regular gym-goers. However, it’s completely achievable for beginners. The moves aren’t complex or difficult, but they call on muscle activation in places you didn’t even know existed – as well as the core for support throughout. The yoga warm-up and cool-down really help though, by firing up your muscles at the start, then bringing your body into a state of relaxation at the end. So, in fact, quite a lot of the hour-long class is spent in yoga flows and stretches.

Where is it?
