5 gym beauty tricks

Get gorgeous post-gym skin the easy way

A good workout can make you feel amazing: brimming with energy and buzzing with mood-boosting endorphins.

But unfortunately the benefits of a gym session don’t always extend to your looks. From sweaty skin to greasy locks, a trip to the gym can leave your skin and hair looking more than a little worse for wear. But it doesn’t have to be that way.

We’ve come up with easy peasy solutions for some of the most common post-gym beauty problems to ensure you’re looking fabulous in next to no time!

Problem 1: Not drinking enough water
Drink plenty of water before, during and after your workout to help keep parched skin at bay. Water nourishes skin cells so chugging down lots of water will ensure a dewy, plump and supple complexion. ‘When the skin is dehydrated, the skin becomes crepey and saggy with small lines and wrinkles, which deepen

When the body is continually dehydrated. Sweating also removes the skin’s natural lubricants, so it’s important to replenish these with
water,’ explains aesthetic doctor Maryam Zamani (drmaryamzamani.com).

Rescue remedy: Spritz Avène Thermal Spring Water Spray (from £3.50, boots.com) all over your face for a refreshing moisture hit.

Problem 2: Skimping on hygiene
Dirty machines can be breeding grounds for bacteria and sweat, so avoid touching your face too much when you’re working out to minimise the number of nasties that transfer onto your skin. Carry a small towel around with you and use it to dab away sweat as well as place over gym equipment before you start your sets. ‘It is important to avoid touching your face to prevent clogged pores and blemishes. This can transfer oil and bacteria (which thrive in gym environments) to your skin. If you need to wipe your face, use a clean towel instead of wiping the skin with your hands or top,’ advises Dr Zamani.

Rescue remedy: Take extra precaution by rubbing hands in The Body Shop’s Absinthe Purifying Hand Gel after using gym equipment.

Problem 3: Wearing make-up
If you go for a full face when you hit the gym, you might be asking for trouble. Working up a sweat wearing make-up can trigger breakouts because sweat gets trapped deep within pores. ‘Sweating in foundation means make-up can clog pores and lead to outbreaks. Thick, oily foundations are particularly bad for blocking pores and causing blemishes,’ says Dr Zamani.

Rescue remedy: If you want coverage without the heaviness of foundation,
a BB cream is the way to go. Clarins BB Skin Perfecting Cream SPF 25 smooths away blemishes, moisturises skin and offers UV protection without overburdening pores, making it a win-win all round. £30, clarins.co.uk.

Problem 4: Skipping the shower
Everyone wants to feel fresh after a gruelling workout, but if you have to rush back to work and don’t have time to jump in the shower, it’s important you add a few goodies to your gym bag to help you feel fresh on the go. ‘The sooner you remove the excess sweat and oil after exercising, the less likely blemishes will appear,’ says Dr Zamani.

Rescue remedy: If showering isn’t an option, make sure you keep a packet of wet wipes on hand for a quick pat down to get rid of impurities. Witch Cleansing & Toning Wipes (£2.99, superdrug.com) effectively remove dirt while moisturising the skin and can be used on both face and body.

Problem 5: Not tying your hair back
The gym can be a nightmare for your hair: sweat and flyaway strands are nobody’s friends! Plait your hair or style it in a bun to keep it protected and out of the way. You could also wrap a headband around your forehead to stop sweaty locks sticking to your face.

Rescue remedy: If you want to avoid washing your hair every single time you go to the gym, dry shampoo can refresh locks in seconds. Try Trevor Sorbie Styling Dry Shampoo (£5.70, boots.com), which adds volume and texture without
leaving chalky roots.
