Best detox juices for a post-party season cleanse

Overindulged this Christmas? Need to cleanse and revive your body? Here are 6 superfood juice recipes for every ill.

The Energy Booster

‘This is definitely my bestselling breakfast smoothie. We call it the Get up and glo! Bananas contain both quick- release glucose and slow-release fructose, giving all-round energy, while dates release their sugars slowly and have a prolonged effect. For a real boost, you should add some maca to the smoothie. Maca is a Peruvian root and belongs to the radish family. It has been used for centuries to give energy as well as balance and help restore hormones.’

Ingredients

2-3 apples
A glug of almond milk
1⁄4 cup oats
2 Medjool dates (pitted)
2 chunks of pineapple
1 banana
1⁄2 tsp maca powder (optional)

Method

Juice the apples, then pour the juice into a blender with all the other ingredients. Add some ice and blend until smooth.

Flu Fighter

‘Take a shot of this every morning to help with those allergies and hay fever symptoms. Ginger is simply amazing and my favourite root by far. As well as being a natural antiviral, antiseptic and anti-inflammatory, it also acts as an antihistamine. Try getting hold of some local honey, which is said to ease hay fever symptoms. English honey rich in local pollen can acclimatise your body and prevent it reacting to airborne pollen spores.’

Ingredients

1 apple
1 thumb's length of ginger
A squeeze of local honey
2 tbsp boiling water

Method

Juice the apple and ginger. Mix the honey with the hot water and stir until dissolved. Add the juice to the honey mixture and enjoy as a shot. Alternatively, add extra hot water for a great alternative to your morning coffee.

The Rehydrator

‘To help your body rehydrate, you need electrolytes that you can’t get by just drinking plain water. Citrus fruits are particularly good for this – especially ones that are red, yellow or orange in colour. The water is an important part as it acts as a carrier for these electrolytes. Pink Himalayan salt provides a whopping 84 trace minerals, plus a unique ionic energy that’s released when the salt is mixed with water. We call this juice the Electrolyte!’

Ingredients

2-3 oranges
1⁄4 pink grapefruit
1⁄4 lemon (unwaxed)
A pinch of Himalayan salt
1 cup of fresh filtered water
A squeeze of honey

Method

Peel the oranges and pink grapefruit. Juice the lemon, grapefruit and oranges, then pour into a blender and add the Himalayan salt, water and honey. You might want to add a little hot water to the honey first to help it dissolve.

The Stomach Settler

‘Both bananas and aloe vera are natural antacids, which make them soothing on upset stomachs, ulcers and heartburn. Aloe helps balance the intestinal flora and can be useful in helping with inflammatory disorders of the gut, such as IBS and colitis. It can also increase healthy bacteria in the intestines, which aids digestion. When chia is mixed with liquid, it forms a jelly-like substance that helps extract any impurities or toxins. What’s also wonderful is that it doesn’t taste of anything, so it won’t spoil your smoothie.’

Ingredients

1-1.5 cups of water
1 banana
1⁄2 avocado
4-6 tbsp aloe vera gel or aloe liquid
1 tbsp chia seeds
1 tbsp honey

Method

Put everything in a blender with some ice and blend until smooth.

The Skin Saviour

‘Drinking raw, freshly juiced carrots, apples, celery and beetroot helps cleanse your liver at a cellular level, promoting regenerative and healing qualities for the skin. As well as betacarotene (from which the body makes vitamin A), lutein and lycopene, carrots also contain silicon, which promotes healthy skin and nails. Beetroot is a wonderful liver cleanser and helps to purify the blood, while celery acts as a natural diuretic, helping to flush toxins and give you that glorious summer glow!’

Ingredients

2 carrots
1 small beetroot bulb (raw)
2 sticks of celery
1 apple
1⁄2 lemon (unwaxed)

Method

Juice all the ingredients and serve over ice.

The Sleep Cure

‘Bananas are packed with potassium, and magnesium, which helps as a natural muscle relaxant. They also have a high fibre content, which will increase bowel regularity, and have antacid effects, helping activate the cells that build the stomach lining to soothe the stomach after a long flight. Cherries are one of the only natural sources of melatonin, which helps to regulate the body clock and promote a sound night’s sleep. This smoothie is sure to put a bounce back in your step!’

Ingredients

1 large banana
1 handful of cherries
1 cup of almond milk
A squeeze of honey

Method

Peel the banana and pit the cherries. Throw in a blender with the almond milk and a handful of ice cubes.
