Sleep hormone to strengthen bones?

New research provides hope for patients looking to prevent osteoporosis. New insight into the relationship between circadian rhythms and bone degeneration could mean that hope for osteoporosis prevention may lie in an unlikely source: melatonin. A study led by Faleh Tamimi, a professor at McGill's School of Dentistry in Montreal, found that supplemental doses of the naturally occurring hormone increased bone strength in elderly rats. Well known to regulate circadian rhythms, melatonin may inhibit the activity of osteoclasts, nocturnal bone cells that spur the breakdown process. "As we age, we sleep less well, which means that the osteoclasts are more active," says Tamimi.
